TREATMENT

The treatment for bronchitis naturally depends on the cause and type of the disease. Acute bronchitis usually clears up on its own. If the cause is bacterial, then antibiotics can be administered. However, these are of no use if a virus is the culprit. For bronchitis caused by irritants, a different approach is required beginning with removal of the irritant.

On the symptomatic level, using bronchodilators which enlarge the air passages can help to relieve breathlessness. Take aspirin or acetaminophen if you have a fever. A number of herb-based remedies are also available. These can work on many levels to soothe and eliminate the symptoms of bronchitis.

Other than medicines, sufferers from bacterial bronchitis, especially if with a high temperature, need to get adequate sleep and rest to allow the immune system to do its job. A quality diet,  rich in fruit and vegetables can help here too. It's also essential to drink plenty of fluids. The volume of fluids consumed should be enough to keep the urine pale. The sufferer should of course stop smoking.

As for chronic bronchitis caused by environmental irritants, the obvious solution is to remove anything in your environment that might irritate your respiratory system. For this you can use devices such as air cleaners and air purifiers. Humidifiers too can both reduce the volume of airborne irritants and keep secretions in your lungs from thickening. For more insidious forms of chronic bronchitis, specialised medical treatments may be needed.
